Document Library

The Document Library web part allows you to display a document library and customize it with your own title, view, and even size. Users with appropriate permissions can view or edit files directly from the web part, or can go the full document library by clicking See allUse the Document Library web part on a page.

Take note that these web parts are not available yet for use on classic pages. On how to create pages and add web parts, see SharePoint Pages and Web Parts Introduction.

Important to know that this web part is still in “Preview”, new updates started rolling out in November 2017. Here’s an update:  New features for SharePoint list and library preview web parts.

I’ve had some issues with how the data presented over the last couple of months. Especially on mobile app. Always remember you have a say. Log requests on User Voice, your feedback DOES matter.

Adding the Document Library Web Part:

Views:

Before adding the web part to your page, make sure that you’ve written views that work well on pages. For example, if your library has 5 metadata columns, I would write a ‘narrower’ view which doesn’t show all the columns and groups data to make the view ‘shorter’. If your page is in Edit mode already and you open a new tab to create the view, you will have to Save and Publish your page before you can pick up that view. Add Web Part:

Put your page in edit mode, click on the “+” to add the Document Library Web Part:

You will be presented with all document libraries on your current site level. Which means you cannot display a library from a subsite. Select the library:

Now edit the web part (1), choose the view (2) and how it will be displayed (3):

Here’s the web part using a Grouped view:
Note that you can also create / add documents and folders from the web part on the page:

When a file is selected you can Share, Delete, Download and Rename:

Purpose of this blog challenge:  I will write 365 blogs in 365 days around Microsoft 365. I did a similar challenge with Office 365, blogs can be found here. I won’t just be talking about the new Microsoft 365 subscription model. I will be sharing any news, tips and tricks around Office / Office 365 / Windows / Mobility and Security. And let’s not forget all the great new Apps & services available.  A lot of what I’ll share on Office and SharePoint will also be applicable to none “Office 365” versions.
