Yes, I miss these, just like I miss staying awake partying till 5am and then still function, but times have changed and so has technology. Let’s take a look at the alternatives in the new modern pages in SharePoint Online.

Promoted Links used to be a great way to share various links to other pages / content with colorful images. SharePoint Online no longer offers this, maybe because they weren’t great for responsive / mobile web sites to start with. We used to code the crazy out of them and did some really cool stuff. Moving on 🙁
I have two great alternatives I would like to introduce you to. The first would be the Hero Web Part.
Hero Web Part
This is a beautiful (responsive) web part, but yes, it does take up a lot of space. 
Simply edit the page and add the Hero Web Part. Keep in mind you can set it to display in Tiles or Layers and determine how many tiles to show. See more on this Web Part in this blog post.

Quick Links can be added as a web part:
You have two options when adding these. Either display Icons (1) as Compact (2) or display Images (3) as Filmstrip (4):
The Compact Setting will wrap the Icons, but the Filmstrip won’t. You’ll notice a Next button on the right to scroll through:
I do miss the Promoted Links, but the Quick Links are a great alternative – and remember no extra code etc. is needed to make them “responsive”. They’ll display great on your Mobile SharePoint App:

Not sure what you mean by roll-over? For me quick links are closest.

Just as I was wondering about the promoted links! I have mixed feeling about these promoted links, I liked it at first, but then found out they have been over used in the organization I work for. Good timing, as we are migrating to SPO, we can finally say bye to them. Thank you Tracy! Great post!

I know this is a dated article, but by enabling the site feature “Team Collaboration Lists”, this brings back the ability to create a Promoted Links app.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve definitely moved forward, it’s much easier to stick to Microsoft’s guidelines and where their design principles are going. But good to know, thank you!
